Did any of you make a New Year’s resolution? Mine is to finally reach my Goodreads reading goal. 

Goal reaches midway point for new Kanaranzi Park equipment

Sioux Valley Energy and Basin Electric Power Cooperative presented Rock County with a $10,000 check to purchase new playground equipment at Kanaranzi Park.

The amount brings the county more than halfway toward meeting the $30,000 goal of paying for the equipment.

Scott Hoogeveen

Scott Alan Hoogeveen, 54, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025.

He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.

Scott Alan Hoogeveen was born on Oct. 14, 1971, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Alvin and Shirley (Berghorst) Hoogeveen.

New year, same sky

Every January arrives with a sense of ceremony. The calendar flips, the ball drops and the confetti falls. And with this passing ritual, we sometimes tell ourselves, often with great sincerity, that this time things will be different! This new year will be a new me!

Greetings from H-BC Elementary teachers and staff

Hills-Beaver Creek Elementary teachers and staff are settling into their new spaces at the new elementary school in Beaver Creek. They agreed to pose for a photograph just before the Christmas break on Pajama Day.

Top 10 LHS and H-BC sports events of the year

Looking back at the sporting events covered in the Star Herald during 2025, I was amazed at all the accomplishments of our local teams and individual athletes in Luverne and Hills-Beaver Creek high schools.

LHS girls’-boys’ basketball win double header vs Adrian/Ellsworth

The Luverne girls’ basketball team beat Adrian-Ellsworth by 14 points in a 75-61 win on the road Monday, Dec. 22, improving the Cardinals’ record to 5-4 for the season.
