When 'old school' meets orange signs it's time to consult Google

Sometimes I’m proud to be “old school.” 

I didn’t get a cell phone until 2006. 

And I still haven’t adopted the use of GPS or other personal navigation technology. 

That’s right; when I travel I use my trusty “mental map” or look at Google Maps to plan ahead.

As we recognized Older Americans Month in May, it was an opportunity to celebrate the contributions, wisdom and resilience of older adults in our communities while also reflecting on the importance of supporting healthy aging for all. 

LHS golf ends season at Section 3AA tournament

Luverne finished out the 2026 golf season playing in Day 2 of the Section 3AA tournament at Oakdale Golf Club in Buffalo Lake on Wednesday, May 27.

Luverne players competed well but were unable to qualify for the state golf tournament as a team or individually on May 27.

Tracer’s last day

It was a few months back that I wrote about how hard it is to say goodbye to your dog. It really doesn’t matter if that dog was a world class hunting dog or your tiny lap dog.

Firefighters have busy week

First responders answered two calls about burning vehicles in two days. The first, on Wednesday, was a semi that had pulled to the side of Highway 75 in Luverne. The second was a passenger vehicle that was engulfed in flames north of Luverne on Highway 75 on Thursday.

Spotlight Dancers host 'Passport to Dance'

The Spotlight Dance Center, Luverne, hosted its spring showcase, “Tickets Please: A Passport to Dance!” at the Historic Palace Theatre on Sunday, May 31.

The following appeared in The Rock County Herald on May 21, 1942. 

“Yes sir, we drove from Luverne to Hartley, Iowa, a distance of 72 miles, and made the entire trip between 12 o’clock noon and six o’clock in the evening. Mister that was driving back in 1912.”
