Mary Ann Van Aartsen was born on June 27, 1939, to Oltman “Ole” and Caroline “Ann” (Richters) Akkerman on a farm northeast of Rock Rapids, Iowa. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in town.

Cardinals fall to Waseca in Section 3AAA Championship

The Luverne Cardinals football team fell 31-12 to Waseca in the Section 3AAA Championship Friday, Oct. 31, in New Ulm.

LHS, the No. 3 seed, took on Waseca, the No. 1 seed, on a cool and drizzly night to end its 2025 season run.

The Luverne volleyball team finished its 2025 season on the road falling 3-1 to Windom Tuesday, Sept. 28, in Section 3AA quarterfinal action.

The No. 4 seed Cardinals played the No. 1 seed Eagles to four sets in the match.
