Star Herald officers all thumbs up in the spirit of gratitude

Star Herald Editorial

This week, the Star Herald offers a thumbs up, thumbs down, editorial comprised entirely of thumbs up.

That’s not to say there’s nothing to complain about, but in the spirit of Thanksgiving, it’s best to focus on what’s going right in Rock County.

Thumbs up — To the bumper crops hauled in by our local farmers. Just when we think our dirt can’t do any better than the year before, new genetics and new technology nudge a little more out of the soil. Of course, it helps that Mother Nature provided timely rain and sunshine.

Thumbs up — To living in the Upper Midwest. Considering thousands of coastal and island residents are affected by hurricanes this time of year, we in Rock County can look forward to the holidays in the comfort of our warm, dry and intact homes.

Thumbs up — To festive holiday events planned in our community. This week’s paper previews the Santa Train and Holiday Stroll on Sunday, Nov. 30, and Winterfest weekend follows on Dec. 5 and 6.

The commercialism and consumerism of the holidays can be overwhelming, but hometown, homemade celebrations are a great way to get in the spirit of the season.

Thumbs up — To a colorful, mild, beautiful fall season in Rock County. It’s not often our lawns are still green through October, and it’s a treat to wear sweatshirts at a time when parkas and moon boots are typically in order.

Thumbs up — To so many things to be thankful for. Everyone has hardships, but the true survivors remember to count their blessings. Among them for most people are family and friends — the most priceless blessings of all.

Of course, we at the Star Herald are thankful for our readers who continue to provide fodder for stories and subscribe to follow our writing.
