Did you feel it this past Sunday and Monday? I bet you did, and you more than likely said, “Oh my! There’s a touch of fall in the air.” If you did, you would be right. Fall, football and pheasant hunting are just around the corner, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier. The first day of fall isn’t until Sept. 22, but football is already underway, and the annual Rock County Pheasants Forever…

I started my last column with the words “Mary and I.” The column was about the two of us babysitting our granddaughter. I use those three words, “Mary and I,” from time to time generally because we do almost everything together, except hunting, fishing, golfing and watching TV. So today the three words “Mary and I” can be followed by “have been married for 38 years.” I know what you’re thinking…

While we are in the midst of a summer full of busy weekends, July seems to be the busiest month of all. The weekends are booked with our grandson’s baseball tournaments, a wedding and a couple of class reunions for good measure. I actually have two 40th class reunions myself this month alone. Mary had her 40th reunion last month. Mary’s class of 1975 was the largest graduating class in…

By    You might not believe it given the Baby Brezza Formula Machine mess and the television volume debacle, but Grandma Mary and I got another chance to watch our granddaughter Brooke for a couple of hours Saturday morning. Brooke’s mom and dad were in the Jubilee Days parade in Hartford, South Dakota, Saturday morning, so they called and asked if we would take Brooke to the parade…

By  Wow! The first official day of summer is still nearly two weeks away, and it has been a busy summer already. With three class reunions and two weddings still on the calendar, mixed in with a couple of summer celebrations and a birthday or two, the weekends are full. Before all summertime business gets underway, Mary and I got away for a couple of days. No big deal, just a couple of days for…

I hung the “Gone Fishing” sign on the office door last week, and as you have come to expect when I am involved, the trip had some trials and tribulations. One of my mottos in life is, “It’s not what you have, it’s who you know and what they have.” Luckily for me, my two fishing buddies have everything needed for a great fishing trip to the Missouri River in South Dakota. Fishing Buddy Leroy has…

Despite the Baby Brezza Formula debacle from our last grandbaby babysitting experience, Grandma and Grandpa Peterson were given a second chance to watch Brooke. To avoid any formula mishaps, I was banned from the Brezza machine. The reason we were babysitting in the first place was so mom and dad could go to the Luke Bryan concert. Instead of formula maker, my role was transportation director,…

Last week was the citywide junk pickup, and by unofficial observation the amount of junk that is put on the curb is dwindling from year to year. Junk pickup is definitely on my top 10 list of favorite city perks. I don’t really have a top 10 list but if I did, junk pickup would be ahead of leaf pick up, but behind snow removal. At our household, junk pickup does cause some contention between…
