Doris Mae Fried was born November 30, 1931, to George and Alice (Voelz) Fried in Luverne, Minnesota.

She grew up and attended school in Luverne until 1941. The family moved several times over the next few years to posts where her father was stationed with the U.S. Army during World War II. She attended school in Georgia and California and finally back to St. Paul, Minnesota. The family then returned to Luverne, and Doris graduated from Luverne High School in 1949.

She received her two-year degree from Worthington Jr. College in 1951 and moved to California where she received a BA degree from Sacramento State College in 1959.

Doris trained as a vocational nurse and worked in various medical practices before beginning her career with the County of Sacramento as a clerical worker and computer operator.

She retired in 1985 and returned to Luverne in 1990. In December 2018, Doris moved into Poplar Creek assisted living facility. On September 13, 2023, Doris became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne, where on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, she died peacefully under hospice care at the age of 91 years, 11 months and 23 days.

Doris was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. Over the years she sang in many church choirs and taught Sunday School. Doris was a member of the Maplewood Auxiliary, A.A.U.W., the American Legion Auxiliary, and a 60-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She had a passion for music and was an accomplished tuba player and a vocal soloist. Doris was proud to be an “army brat” and an American. She enjoyed traveling in Europe and the States over the years. Her favorite pastimes were needlework, sewing and wood carving.

Doris is survived by numerous cousins and was preceded in death by her parents, George and Alice Fried; grandparents, Max and Emaleon Voelz; and uncle and aunt, Floyd O. and Ella Norton.

Funeral service was held Monday, Nov. 27, at 1:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.

Arrangements are under the care of Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne.

Memorials may be directed to Union Gospel Mission in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Grace Lutheran Church, Luverne, Minnesota; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
