Blue Mound Quilters host quilt show at Hinkly House
The Blue Mound Quilters will host a quilt show at the Hinkly House in Luverne during Buffalo Days weekend. Special showings are from 4-7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 31 and June 1, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 2.
The regular meeting of the quilters will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 4, at the Hinkly House so members can pick up their quilts. New members are welcome.
Veterans Home program May 30
The Minnesota Veterans Home Memorial Day program will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, in the dining room. Chaplin Tom Voigt and featured speaker Staff Sergeant Darcy Lowman-Craig will present the program, with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 123 and VFW Post 2727 of Luverne.
Men’s Community Prayer Breakfast is June 1
All men of the area are invited to the sixth annual Men’s Community Prayer Breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Friday, June 1, at Grand Prairie Events in Luverne for good food, fellowship and prayer. Cost is $10 per person.
‘Tales from the Graves’ June 3
“Tales from the Graves #7” and a homemade pie and ice cream social will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the History Center on East Main Street. The event will take place at the History Center this year because the featured individuals are not buried in local cemeteries. Re-enactors will again share their stories.
The homemade pie and ice cream social for a freewill donation will help support the work of the Rock County Historical Society.
Community Blood Drive June 4
Sanford Luverne and Community Blood Bank will host a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 3-6 p.m. Monday, June 4, at Sanford Luverne. Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parent consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health. An I.D. is required. Feedlot implant clinic June 5
Binford Feedlot will host an implant clinic from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at 1377 170th Avenue, Luverne. It’s a free, hands-on demonstraton about proper implant management strategies. The event, sponsored by Zoetis Animal Health and Form-A-Feed, will also demonstrate chute side implanting on live cattle.

Luverne Farmers Market starts June 7
Luverne Farmers Market will be from 4 to 7 p.m. every Thursday from June 7 through Oct. 25, rain or shine, at Redbird Field just south of East Main Street.
Vendors now accept debit cards, credit cards, SNAP and EBT.

Nature walk at Touch the Sky June 9
Ethno-botanist Jeffrey Emmel will host a nature walk at Touch the Sky Prairie at 1023 171st Street north and west of Luverne beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9. The first 100 children in attendance will receive a free butterfly net, courtesy of the Luverne Convention and Visitors Bureau. Refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.
Bus trip to Twins game June 23
Luverne Community Ed still has nine seats available on a bus to the Minnesota Twins game Saturday, June 23. Seats are in rows 1-4 in the shaded family section straight out from third base. Tickets include a hot dog and soda at the game. The bus will stop for breakfast at McDonald’s in Mankato and for supper at the Pizza Ranch with those meals at individual cost. Cost is $96 per person. Rock County Library announces summer reading program
The Rock County Community Library is excited to launch its 2018 summer reading program, “Reading Takes You Everywhere!” The program is open to ages Pre-K through grade 12.
During June and July the library will host a variety of events for families to encourage and support a love of reading. Participants will win prizes for reaching their reading goals.

Train to become a youth firearms teacher
The Minnesota DNR needs more youth firearms instructors to offer youth gun safety classes in Rock County. Training class to become a certified volunteer instructor to teach the field day for the online firearms safety course, as well as to teach in the classroom, is offered through the DNR. Two different 6 session clay classes will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 19. Students grades 5–adult who would like to learn hand building and wheel throwing may register for Play with Clay. Fee is $49, plus a $15 material fee. Students in grades 4–adult will learn hand building techniques creating pinch pots and slab thrown trays and pots at Pinch, Pull, Pat With Clay. Fee is $35 plus $15 material fee.

Census Information is needed for preschool children in families new to the community. In order for the district to connect with families about school events and the state-mandated preschool screening for all 3-year-old children. Families with 4-year-old children who have not been screened should call 283-4724 to be screened prior to kindergarten.
Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom is open to families, daycares and visitors to play and learn. The classroom, located on the southwest side of the Luverne school, is designed for preschoolers to learn by discovery and exploration. Additional pavers will be added each spring. Call 283-4724. Luverne Senior Dining prepares and serves nutritious meals every weekday and provides frozen meals for weekends. According to the Older Americans Act, senior citizens may contribute what they can afford for one meal per day up to seven days per week. Call 283-9846 for information and to make reservations.
Senior swim days
The Luverne Senior Citizen Center reminds area residents that the Rock County Pool and Fitness Center Senior swim times are from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays. Non-members pay $1.50.
Home delivered meals available to rural residents
Luverne Senior Dining and Nutrition Services Inc., Waseca, offers home delivered meals to local rural residents 60 or older or to disabled younger residents. Call Neva, 283-9846, to order or to volunteer delivery services. Volunteer drivers are reimbursed mileage.
Cash for Kids recycling program
Luverne Elementary School, along with Parents: Partners in Prevention, requests free support from the public in its Cash for Kids recycling program that receives cash for old cell phones, laser cartridges and inkjet printer cartridges. Place the used items in their original containers or in a resealable plastic bag and drop them off at participating businesses or at the elementary school. VA benefits available to Iraq veterans
Veterans recently discharged from combat operations can have free medical care for two years for conditions related to their service, regardless of income status. Call Rock County Veterans Services Officer Dave Haugom, 283-5061.
Medical equipment available to public
The Rock County Retired Senior Volunteers Office has medical equipment available for use free of charge. It’s the equipment that the VFW used to loan out. A $25 deposit, which is refunded upon return of the equipment, is required. Call Greta, 283-5064, to inquire.
Need help with prescriptions?
Senior LinkAge Line has staff and community volunteers available to assist individuals one-on-one in finding programs that may help them pay for prescription costs. The phone number is 1-800-333-2433. The LinkAge Line, a program of the Southwest Minnesota Area Agency on Aging, connects seniors to services such as transportation, in-home services, insurance and finances. Prescription assistance, however, is the most common reason for calling the LinkAge Line.
