Meetings

Spring weight restrictions in place
Spring weight road restrictions are in place on Rock County roadways.
Ending dates are variable, and drivers must check for updates throughout the spring. Call Rock County Highway Engineer Mark Sehr at 507-283-5010 with questions and updates.
 
Free tax help at library
Free tax preparation for all low-income and the elderly will be available at the Rock County Library through April 15. Call 507-449-5040 for appointments.

Generations is open from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with activities and refreshments.

Community Blood Bank/Sanford blood drive March 16
Sanford Luverne Medical Center will host a blood drive with the Community Blood Bank from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, March 16, at Sanford Luverne. Donors are reminded to bring an ID.
 
Test your Rock County history trivia at Take 16
Rock County is 150 years old this year, and the Rock County Historical Society and Rock County Library are teaming up to celebrate with Take 16 Brewing Co. for Thursday night trivia. Contests (with prizes awarded) are at 7 p.m. March 12, April 16 and May 14 at the brewery.

Hospice Charity Dinner/Auction tickets on sale
Tickets are still available for the Hospice Charity Dinner and Auction set for Saturday, April 18, at Grand Prairie Events in Luverne. Tickets for $55 may be purchased at the Hospice office at 304 N. McKenzie Street, or call 507-283-1805.
The deadline to advertise in the program booklet or donate items for the auction is March 13.
 
Snake Patrick's Day Celebration March 14
Blue Mounds State Park naturalist Amber Brooks will offer a “Snake Patrick’s Day” program about snakes from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the picnic shelter. Learn about snakes and meet a live snake at the come-and-go event. The event is free, but a park vehicle sticker is required. Call 507-283-6057.
 
Conservation work group meeting March 16
The Rock Soil and Water Conservation District and Natural Resources Conservation Service will convene a local work group meeting at 8:30 a.m. Monday, March 16, in the Land Management Office conference room.
The point of the meeting is to provide guidance and discuss local resource concerns and NRCS programs in Rock County.  Contact the NRCS District Conservationist for an application or contact Doug Bos at 507-283-8862 for information.
 
Kindergarten Round-Up March 19
Luverne Kindergarten Round-Up will be Thursday, March 19, at the Luverne Elementary School for children 5 or older by Sept. 1, 2020. Session 1 at 5:30 is for new kindergarten parents, and Session 2 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. is for a “meet and greet.” Call 507-283-4497 to register.
 
Free food giveaway March 19
New Life Celebration Church will offer free produce, bread and meat from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at the Generations building at 319 East Lincoln Street in Luverne for those having trouble putting food on the table. Bring your own bags and boxes. Call 507-283-4366.
 
Heart Health Lunch and Learn March 24
Sanford Luverne Medical Center will host a Heart Health Lunch and Learn with cardiologist Adam Stys from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 24. The class and lunch are free but registration is required. Call 507-449-1272 to register.
 
Dementia Network Memory Café March 23
Good Samaritan Society and the Rock County Dementia Network will host a Memory Café from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 23, at Wildflowers Coffee Boutique for caregivers and anyone with memory loss. There will be coffee, support and socializing on the topic of “family sayings” and “old wives’ tales.” Call Carrie at 507-283-1996.
 
 
Blue Mound State Park activities
Saturday, March 14, 1–3 p.m. Snake Patrick's Day Celebration: Meet at the picnic shelter. St. Patrick may be rumored to have led the snakes out of Ireland, but here at Blue Mounds our snakes have a very important job to do. Come learn all about snakes with our naturalist, make snake crafts, and meet a REAL live snake at the Picnic Shelter! Drop in anytime between 1 and 3 p.m. This event is a come and go as you please adventure.
Saturday, April 4, 1-3 p.m.   Bunny Hop in the Park: Meet at the picnic shelter. Rabbits, rabbits everywhere! It's time for the first-ever Bunny Hop at Blue Mounds. Come join us for a fun-filled adventure through the world of rabbits, enjoy some rabbit crafts, and scout for signs of our furry friends on the bunny hop trail. Meet at the picnic shelter at the cart-in campsites. Drop in anytime between 1 and 3 p.m. This event is a come and go as you please adventure.
Friday, April 24, 4:30-6:00 p.m., Arbor Day Tree ID Hike: Meet at the amphitheater in main campground. Join our park naturalist for a tree ID hike through the park to learn more about the trees of Blue Mounds State Park. Study leaf shape, bark, and make your very own identification book. This hike will require stepping down, walking both up and downhill, and walking along a trail that may be wet or muddy.
SATURDAY, MAY 9, 1–3 p.m., Outdoor Moms: Meet at the north picnic area. Does your mom love the great outdoors? Or are you a mom hoping to share the outdoors with your child? Come and see all that Blue Mounds State Park has to offer for your next family adventure! Learn about animal moms, make your own “mom and me” craft, and participate in other “mom and me” activities. Drop in anytime between 1 and 3 p.m. This event is a come and go as you please adventure.
All events are free, but entrance to the park requires a vehicle permit. Daily permits are $7 and annual permits are $35. Both are available at the main office.

Defensive Driving refresher classes will be March 26 and March 30.
Defensive Driving first-time class, an 8-hour class, will be offered in two sessions, April 20 and 27, four hours each evening.
Computer breach, computer attack, phishing, online dangers, home security – learn from a bank security analyst at Cyber Security—Educate Yourself Now! on March 16.  There are simple things you can do to protect yourself and your family.  No fee (sponsored by Blandin Broadband Grant), but registrations required as class size is limited.
A new 10-week set of ECFE classes begins the week of March 17. These 90-minute classes offer an opportunity for parents to create memories with their children ages 0-5 with the staff and preschool rooms at school.
Beginning iPhones & iPads covers  saving phone numbers, taking photos and saving them, FaceTime, downloading apps. Choose afternoon or evening time March 17 at the library. No fee (sponsored by Blandin Broadband Grant), but registration is required as class size is limited.
Pizza Pizza, Pizza on March 19 is for kids in grades 1-5 who want to learn how to make a pizza from the pros. Class will be at Luverne Pizza Ranch. Fee of $15 covers pizza, pop, and an apron to take home.
Taco Fish Hand Building class teaches basics of working with clay on Mar. 21 and 28. Fee is $25 plus pay $5 material fee to instructor. (For grade 5 through adults.)
Home Alone will teach your child (grades 3-6) basic first aid, fire safety, internet safety, gun safety, storm safety, and about dealing with siblings, loneliness and boredom. Fee is $25.
Think summer! Students in grades K-12 sign up by March 27 for Summer Comm Ed softball, baseball, T-ball teams.  After March 27, registrations will be accepted only if there are openings, and a late fee of $50 will be applied.
