Register for Wienerman and Tour de Donut

•Wienerman World Championships, a four-person relay with eating challenges, takes place on Hot Dog Night, Thursday, July 11, in downtown Luverne at 7 p.m.

•Tour de Donut Minnesota is Saturday, July 13. The 55-mile race begins at 7 a.m. at Luverne City Park. The shorter routes begin at 8 a.m. at the park.


St. John hosts Internet and Medicare seminars

•The Senior LinkAge Line will offer a class for beginning internet users from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Monday, July 15, at St. John Lutheran Church, 803 North Cedar Street, Luverne. The class is for adults who would like to learn the basics of operating a computer, how to use the internet and how to use email. Participants will also learn how to use website.

•A class to learn the basics of Medicare will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 15, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. Participants will learn the basics of Medicare and their coverage options in Minnesota. The class size will be kept small to allow time for personal attention. Preregister by calling 507-283-2316. A free light supper will be provided by St. John beginning at 5:45 p.m.


Sign up for soccer league, coaches needed

Soccer league for ages 4 through grade 4 (end of 2019 school year) begins Aug. 6 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Call Michelle Dekam at 227-6125 if you can coach. Training will be provided.


Brown Bag Lunchtime Concert Series starts July 16

Luverne Street Music will host a Brown Bag Lunchtime Concert Series from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting Tuesday, July 16, featuring free live music. Bring a chair and lunch; a limited number of picnic tables will be available. Rain location is inside the Carnegie.


Free food July 18

New Life Celebration Church will offer free produce, bread and meat from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18, in the Generations building (former Senior Center) on East Lincoln Street for those having trouble putting food on the table. Bring your own bags and boxes. Call 283-4366.


Splish Splash Summer Bash at plaza July 18

The summer Thursday Night Plaza series continues with Splish Splash Summer Bash from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18, in the History Center parking lot on East Main Street in Luverne. Supper will be available served by Sterling’s Café and Grille, and there will be free water games and activities for all ages, sponsored by local businesses.


Register by July 18 for defensive driving

Save money on your car insurance premium if you are 55 or older by taking the 8-hour defensive driving class Aug. 13 and Aug. 20 through Luverne Community Education. Classes will be four hours each evening. Cost is $25. Register by calling 507-283-4724 by July 18. (The office will be closed from July 19 through Aug. 9.)


Red Cross blood drive July 29

The American Red Cross is facing a blood shortage and has issued an emergency call for donations. They will host a blood drive at Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne from 1-7 p.m. Monday, July 29.

Donors can make an appointment by using the Blood Donor App, going to or by calling 1-800-733-2767. Completing a RapidPass online health history questionnaire can reduce the time it takes to donate.

Donors are reminded to bring along identification.


Discovery Time has openings for fall

Openings in the Discovery Time Preschool are available for 3-4-year-olds in the MWF morning class and the T/Th afternoon class. Children who are 3 by Sept. 1, 2019, are eligible, and schohlarships are available if income guidelines can be met. Call Luverne Community Education at 507-283-4724 for more details. Free Medicare classes

Free classes for people who are new to Medicare are offered the second and third Mondays every month at the Minnesota River Area on Aging, 1939 Engebretson Ave., Slayton.

In the first class, participants will learn basics of Medicare and their options. The second class teaches how to research these options using non-biased tools, such as the Medicare website and Medicare Plan Finder Tool.

Suzuki Violin and Cello Lessons week of Aug. 5 for ages 4 to 10 and parent or adult. Fee is $85.

Guys and Dolls Guthrie Theatre bus trip is Aug. 24. Fee is $113.

Pottery Wheel Throwing for grades 9 through adult starts Aug. 5. Fee is $40 plus $10 for materials.

Art Camp for completed grades 4 through 6 will be Aug. 6, 7, 8. Fee is $25.
