Fall is fast upon us. From changing leaves to pumpkins for sale to the return of pumpkin pie-spiced lattes, we are in full fall mode. With fall comes harvest season. The crops planted in the spring are now ready for harvest, revealing their results. For many farmers, there will be rejoicing over an abundant yield, but for others, disappointment at the lack of return. Harvest season is great for…

In 2017 we acknowledged the anniversary of 500 years since Martin Luther protested what he thought was lacking in the church. Or maybe a better way to express what Luther was trying to do was to reform the church so that it more closely resembled what Jesus intended the church to be.  This was a huge task, and Luther did not walk this path alone. There were many others before, during and after…

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, …” Ephesians 1:18  Paul prayed that the eyes of the Ephesians’ hearts would be opened so they could know “the hope to which he has called you.”  Notice that Paul did not pray that God would give them a better set of circumstances. He prayed that they would see more clearly what…

The book of Proverbs shows us practical lessons from the world, including what we learn from animals. In Proverbs 6, a father tells his son to consider the ant: “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.” Bob, whom I met at church during seminary, taught me to…

This past Monday was Labor Day. Hopefully it was a good day of rest from your regular daily labor.  Sometimes we get so busy and have so many responsibilities, we struggle to rest.  We convince ourselves that we have way too much to do and don’t have time to rest.  We work every waking hour just trying to get everything done and find out there is always more to do.  That means rest continues…

What television show started with the line, “What time is it?” What time it is relates to this time too. It is time to find the school list that was mailed out in July. It is time to realize the shoes the kids have been wearing all summer are now two sizes too small. It is time to replace the batteries in all the alarms and detectors. It is time to triple check the calendar and mark off all the…

With summer settling down, school will be back in session here shortly for Luverne and surrounding communities.  For the kids, this means butterflies in anticipation of a new school year, or maybe fear of the unknown that a new season brings.  Some enjoy the prospect of learning something new, while others may believe they know all they need to know to succeed and make it in the world. …

If you’ve lived in Luverne longer than 10 minutes, you already know we’re in the middle of what the Bible might call “tribulation,” and what the rest of us call “construction season.”  Highway 75 is shut down, Main Street is the detour, and now they’re closing the intersection we all actually need.  I don’t know who’s in charge of cone reproduction, but they’re fruitful and multiplying far…
