Adapt and adjust. That’s what Covid-19 has required of everyone, and that’s what the Hills-Beaver Creek Patriots had to do this week.
The Patriots were set up to play Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda on Thursday, Oct. 15, but just before the game began, it was called off due to quarantine requirements for the HLOF team.
“With our game getting canceled on Thursday, there were a lot of disappointed people,” H-BC head coach Rex Metzger said.
So, he said H-BC shifted gears and instead scheduled a game with Edgerton on Saturday, Oct. 17.
“We knew Edgerton didn’t have a game, so we reached out to them to see if they wanted to play Saturday.”
The Patriots prepared to play HLOF all week but adapted and turned in an impressive outing en route to defeating Edgerton 56-6. With the win the Patriots improved to 2-0 on the young season.
The Flying Dutchmen struck first on a 56-yard touchdown pass to go up 6-0. Unfortunately for the visitors, that’s all the Patriots would give up as the defense put the clamps on the Flying Dutchmen’s offense the rest of the game.
“I thought our defense played a physical game,” Metzger said. “They responded after giving up an early touchdown in the first quarter. Edgerton is a big physical team and is difficult to prepare for defensively with them running the double-wing offense.”
Following the Edgerton touchdown, the Patriots responded by scoring 24 points in the first quarter.
Gavin Wysong got the Patriots on the board with a 91-yard rushing touchdown. Ty Bundesen converted the two-point conversion to put the Patriots up 8-6.
Wysong then hooked up with Zander Wysong on a 40-yard touchdown. Gavin Wysong converted the two-point conversion to put the Patriots up 16-6.
Tyson Bork got in on the fun by scoring on a 29-yard rushing touchdown. Gavin Wysong converted the two-point conversion to put the Patriots up 24-6 at the end of the first quarter.
“We were able to put some nice drives together,” Metzger said. “We had a couple of big runs early by Gavin and Tyson to take control of the game.”
Gavin Wysong scored his second rushing touchdown of the game in the second quarter. He then converted the two-point conversion to put the Patriots up 32-6.
Bork scored H-BC’s second touchdown of the second quarter on an 85-yard run. Gavin Wysong connected with Casey Kueter to put H-BC up 40-6 at halftime.
In the third quarter, it was the Wysong connection hooking up again. Gavin Wysong and Zander Wysong got the Patriots on the board with a 50-yard receiving touchdown. Gavin Wysong passed to Chase Bosch to put the Patriots up 48-6.
“They were packing the box against our run game,” Metzger said. “We were able to hit Zander Wysong on a couple of seam routes.”
Dewell Rauk wrapped up the scoring with a 38-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. Luke Fuerstenberg scored the two-point conversion to put the Patriots up 56-6.
Gavin Wysong passed for 90 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
Bork rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns. As a team the Patriots rushed for 372 yards.
Zander Wysong caught two passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
Calvin Erickson led the team with 11 tackles. Erickson also recorded one sack.
Gavin Wysong and Casey Kueter both recorded seven tackles.
Ty Bundesen recorded five tackles. Donovan Leenderts recorded five tackles and one sack.
Oliver Deelstra recorded one interception.
The Patriots will look to stay undefeated when they play host to Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Friday, Oct. 23.
