Luverne tops Trojans, drops road game to Morris-Benson

The Luverne boys’ hockey team opened this past week by snapping a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 home victory over Worthington on Thursday, Feb. 11.
On Saturday, Feb. 13, they lost a road contest to Morris/Benson, 7-2.

The Cardinals and Trojans both entered Thursday night’s contest inside Blue Mound Ice Arena on four-game losing streaks. It was the Cardinals that came out on top to get back into the win column with a 4-1 victory.
Brock Behrend opened the scoring for the Cardinals in the first period. The sophomore skater was assisted by Cade Wenninger and Will Serie.
Wenninger scored the second goal of the opening period for the Cardinals to put them up 2-0. Carlton Oftedahl recorded the assist on the goal.
The Trojans scored the lone goal of the second period to cut into Luverne’s two-goal lead.
Wenninger scored his second goal of the game in the third period to put the Cardinals up 3-1.
Ethan Langseth wrapped up the scoring on an empty-net goal to secure the 4-1 victory for the Cardinals.
Shaid Shearer recorded 37 saves for the Cardinals.
 
Morris/Benson 7, LHS 2
The Storm scored five unanswered goals to break a 2-2 tie to pick up the 7-2 victory over the Cardinals on Saturday, Feb. 13.
Morris-Benson scored the first two goals of the game in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
The Cardinals answered by scoring the first two goals in the second period to even the contest at 2-2.
Wenninger got the Cardinals on the board first to make it a 2-1 contest. Behrend and Oftedahl both recorded assists on the goal.
Then it was Kaleb Hein scoring a short-handed goal to even the game at 2-2. Zach Kruse recorded the assist on Hein’s goal.
That’s when things hit the proverbial fan for the Cardinals. The Storm scored five unanswered goals to pick up the 7-2 victory.
Shearer recorded 45 saves for the Cardinals.
As it stands right now the Cardinals own a 2-6 record. They’ll look to pick up their third win of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 16, when they hit the road to take on Worthington.
They’ll then return home on Friday, Feb. 19, to take on Waseca. At press time Waseca owned a 7-2 record.
