Twenty Cardinals competed in the 97th running of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls May 6 and 7 with over 3,500 athletes from the five-state area.
Entries are limited, so only the best make the field. Although some events were run as one division, generally athletes competed in three classes – B, A, and AA – with Luverne competing in Class A.
“I thought the kids did an awesome job of getting out and competing with some of the best kids in the region,” said LHS head track coach Pete Janiszeski.
“In the individual events you are competing against all ranges of school sizes, so it is a tremendous accomplishment just to get into the meet.”
Friday evening’s final in the 3200 saw Tenley Nelson and Jenna DeBates starting in the back of the pack and working their way up through the field.
Ultimately, Nelson advanced all the way to second place with a time of 10:57.37, breaking her own school record. DeBates finished seventh in a time of 11:11.47.
Ashton Sandbulte ran a 10.82 in his 100-meter preliminary race, good for the third-fastest time going into the Saturday finale. More impressive was that the 100-meter runners competed in one division.
Other Friday finals included Eli Radtke pole vaulting 13 feet. Several other competitors made the same height, so after calculating misses, he ended up in 12th place.
The 4-by-800 of Ryan Fick, Sage Viessman, Camden Janiszeski and Owen Janiszeski finished eleventh (8:43.26).
The 4-by-200-meter relay team of Lucky Dara, Zachary Terrio, Gavin DeBeer and Sandbulte finished 16th in 1:36.41.
The girls’ 4-by-200 team of Makena Nelson, Isabella Oye, Anna Banck and Sarah Stegenga finished 16th (1:53.45).
Jordan Friedrichsen finished 16th in the shot put (48-4 1/2).
Camden Janiszeski finished 26th (9:59.15) in the 3200. Rounding out Day 1, Jocelyn Hart placed 16th (37-2) and Jadyn Hart 30th (35-0) in the discus.
On Day 2, with high winds, race officials started the 100-meter-dash in the opposite direction, and Sandbulte clocked a wind-aided 10.63, which was good for third place and another school record to break his own previous record of 10.95.
The 4-by-100-meter relay team of Dara, Zachary Terrio, Radtke and Sandbulte placed third in a time of 45.38.
The girls’ 4-by-100 team of Mia Wenzel, Banck, Oye and Stegenga finished 19th (54.02).
All in all, Janiszeski said it was a good day.
“We had our fair share of podium (top 8) finishes, which is awesome,” he said. “I was very proud of the kids for their efforts and performances.”
