LHS girls are second, boys fourth at True Team

The Cardinal track teams had an early 4:30 a.m. bus ride to make the long trek to Stillwater for the state True Team meet.
Twelve teams were competing, including one champion from each of the eight sections and four wild card teams.
The Cardinal girls placed second and the boys were fourth in an overall solid competition, according to coach Pete Janiszeski.
“I am extremely proud of the efforts the kids put in today,” he said.
“They got out and competed hard and put themselves in a position to be on the podium and win the meet. That’s all you can ever ask for.”
True Team competition originated in 1987 by the State Track and Field Coaches Association.
The year-end Minnesota State High School Track and Field Meet also has a team winner, but it can often be won by a few athletes with high finishes.
The True Team meet embraces a full “team” concept. Each team has two entries per event and one relay team. Every entrant scores based on their finishes first on down to twenty-fourth, for example, in individual events.
Throughout the meet the girls were steadily in the top three teams score-wise, ultimately taking home an impressive second-place finish.
They were edged out by a mere four points by Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ost/Kingland.
The LHS girls racked up six first-place finishes.
Tenley Nelson won the 800-meter run (2:21.96) and the 1,600-meter run (5:14.44). Jenna DeBates was first in the 3200-meter run (11:53.63), Elizabeth Wagner was first in the 300-meter hurdles (48.88), Jocelyn Hart was first in the shot put (38-07 3/4), and the 4-by-400-meter relay team of Tiana Lais, Elizabeth Wagner, Sarah Stegenga and Tenley Nelson was first in 4:09.62.
Third-place finishers were Jenna DeBates 1600-meter run (5:26.07), Ella Schmuck 3,200-meter run (12:29.09), Jadyn Hart discus (116-06), Elizabeth Wagner high jump (4-10) and Kendra Thorson triple jump (32-01).
The LHS boys finished fourth overall, missing third place by just 14.5 points.
The boys had a big day from Ashton Sandbulte who finished first in the 100-meter-dash (11.18), first in the 200-meter dash (22.35), fourth in the 400-meter-dash (52.04) and fifth in the long jump (19-02.50).
Eli Radtke won the pole vault (13-3).
Camden Janiszeski had a second in the 1600-meter run (4:36.19). Third place finishers were Owen Janiszeski in the 800-meter run (2:07.78) and Jordan Friedrichsen shot put (47-05 3/4).
Janiszeski stated said he was proud of his Cardinal athletes.
“I told them before the meet to focus on excellence, execution and having fun, and if they did that, the points would take care of themselves,” he said.
“In a meet with 5,136 points available and to come within four points of a title on the girls’ side and 14.5 points of the podium on the boys’ side is just a tremendous tribute to these kids, the sacrifices they’ve made and their commitment to being the very best they can be.”
