LHS boys' hockey goes 2-1 with wins over Marshall and Fairmont

The Luverne boys’ hockey team went 2-1 this past week to bring their overall record to 6-9. The Cardinals are now 3-2 in their past five games with both losses coming against a New Ulm team that’s currently on a 13-game winning streak.
The Cardinals opened the week with a 7-0 loss to New Ulm at home on Tuesday, March 2.
Luverne then won the next two games with a 5-3 victory over Marshall on Friday, March 5, and an 11-2 victory over Fairmont on Saturday, March 6.
 
New Ulm 7, LHS 0
New Ulm defeated Luverne 4-3 in overtime in their first match-up of this season.
The two teams looked to be in for another tightly contested game on Tuesday after they failed to score a goal and went into the locker room tied 0-0 after the first period.
New Ulm erupted in the second period by scoring four goals. Then in the third period New Ulm added three more to pick up the 7-0 victory over the Cardinals.
 
LHS 5, Marshall 3
The Cardinals picked up their fifth win of the season on Friday, March 5, with a 5-3 victory over the Marshall Tigers.
Marshall opened the scoring with a goal at the 15 minute mark of the first period to take an early 1-0 lead.
A few minutes later Cade Wenninger tied the game at 1-1. Brock Behrend recorded the assist on Wenninger’s goal.
Behrend scored a short-handed goal right before the end of the first period to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers tied the game at 2-2 seven minutes into the second period.
A Cooper Arends goal gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead. Zach Kruse recorded the assist on Arends’ goal.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the third period to tie the game at 3-3.
A Henry Hartquist goal gave the Cardinals a 4-3 lead. Behrend and Wenninger both recorded assists on Hartquist’s go-ahead goal.
Carlton Oftedahl wrapped up the scoring to put the Cardinals up 5-3.
Behrend and Hartquist both recorded assists on the goal.
Shaid Shearer recorded 58 saves for the Cardinals.
 
LHS 11, Fairmont 2
In the battle of the Cardinals it was Luverne coming out on top Saturday, March 6, 11-2.
The Cardinals scored six goals in the opening period and never looked back en route to their sixth win of the season.
Behrend scored the first two goals of the game for the Cardinals to get them off and rolling.
Kruse scored the third goal of the period to put Luverne up 3-0. Hans Hoven recorded the assist on the goal.
Behrend scored his third goal of the period to put Luverne up 4-0.
Fourteen seconds after Behrend’s third goal of the period, Fairmont got on the board to trim Luverne’s lead to 4-1.
The Cardinals answered right back by scoring a goal 15 seconds later. Wenninger’s goal put the Cardinals up 5-1.
Behrend wrapped up the scoring by notching his fourth goal of the opening period to put the Cardinals up 6-1.
It took the Cardinals 55 seconds to score the first goal of the second period. Arends put the Cardinals up 7-1. Oftedahl recorded the assist on the goal.
A Spencer Kracht goal put the Cardinals up 8-1. Kruse recorded the assist on the goal.
Behrend scored his fifth goal of the game to put Luverne up 9-1. Wenninger recorded the assist on Behrend’s goal.
Following a Fairmont goal, Behrend scored his sixth goal of the game to put the Cardinals up 10-2.
Behrend scored the lone goal in the third period to make the final score 11-2.
Shearer recorded 28 saves for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals will take on Fairmont once again on Tuesday, March 9.
