Cross country, tennis open practice Monday

When the Minnesota State High School League announced plans for fall sports Aug. 4, much of the focus was on the football and volleyball seasons moving to spring.
Cross country, tennis, swimming, soccer and other teams, however, were given the green light to compete this fall with various guidelines for athlete safety.
Of those sports, Luverne High School offers cross country for boys and girls and tennis for girls in the fall.
Both programs will open their seasons Monday, Aug. 17.
Instead of the normal large group eligibility meeting, LHS Activities Director Todd Oye will visit the first day of practice for each sport to get information to athletes.
The MSHSL is allowing fall practice for not only volleyball and football, but also for spring sports, all of which lost their seasons last spring due to the pandemic.
Oye said plans are still being made on which sports will be having practice seasons this fall and how those practice schedules will work. The practices will not begin until after school starts on Sept. 8.
