Local high school baseball players will finally take the field this weekend.
First, coronavirus restrictions canceled the high school spring sports season in April.
In May the American Legion board officially canceled summer seasons for Legion and Junior Legion baseball teams in Minnesota due to the pandemic.
Luverne Community Education staff worked to find another option to give local players a shortened baseball season if virus-related restrictions ease and continue to evolve.
Teams were formed for 19U Luverne baseball players who would have been on the Legion team and for 17U players who would have been on the Junior Legion team.
Season schedules for the two teams are still being developed, but both plan to open play in tournaments in South Dakota this weekend.
The 19U team, coached by Codie Zeutenhorst, will play in Sioux Falls, and the 17U team, coached by Mike Wenninger, will compete in Renner.
