10 years ago (2007)
•Busse’s Plumbing and Heating is outgrowing its current workspace and will expand south of Luverne.
Jim Remme, company president, approached the Luverne Planning Commission Monday night about building across from the Verne Drive –In Theatre along south Highway 75.
The property, currently owned by Glenn Burmeister, is zoned “highway commercial,” and Busse’s Plumbing and Heating uses don’t quite fit the listed uses allowed.
At Monday’s meeting the commission approved Remme’s request, agreeing that the business meets the intent of the zone.
 
25 years ago (1992)
•Our garbage could become someone else’s worry if Rock County decides to ship its waste to Lyon County, Minn.
Environmental Officer Rick Dillon said Tuesday Lyon County is soliciting waste from several counties in southwest Minnesota in an effort to become a regional landfill.
Dillon aid the tipping charge for the Lyon County landfill is $35 per ton, a substantially lower charge than other similar landfills.
 
50 years ago (1967)
•Davis Motor Co. will show the 1968 model Dodge cars and trucks today, Verne Davis owner announced.
Dodge this year features five different lines, the Monaco, Polara, Coronet, Charger and Dart.
“We’ll be open until 9 tonight,” said Davis “and we’ll be serving free coffee and doughnuts all day and evening. We’ll also have a registration for door prizes.”
Chrysler and Plymouth cars of 1968 will go on display today at Van’s Motor Company.
The special showing will continue through tomorrow, with coffee and doughnuts being served both days, and the showrooms will be open until 9 p.m. each evening. There will also be registration for special prizes.
 
75 years ago (1942)
•­To have the end of his finger bitten off by an angry pig was the painful experience of Phillip Lamb, Magnolia, while attending the Minnesota State Fair last week.
Phillip, according to reports, was assisting the Crawford Brothers, of Beaver Creek, show their hogs at the fair. Two of the porkers began fighting, and while Phillip was trying to separate them, one of them nipped the tip of his finger. He was taken to the hospital, where it was first thought it would be necessary to amputate the injured member but where it was later found that a skin grafting operation would save the finger.
 
100 years ago (1917)
•The Minnesota Commission of Public Safety late Wednesday afternoon issued an order that virtually kills the liquor traffic at Trosky. The order prohibits the sale of liquor except for immediate consumption at the bar where sold, and permits the saloon to keep open only between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Under the order the four wholesale liquor houses at Trosky will have to close and the one saloon now being operated will be unable to sell liquor of any kind by the bottle or other quantity to be carried out of the place where sold.
