•Rock County Commissioners Tuesday approved a variation of a plan to improve the Rock County Highway Department building.
Heartland Express is using a state grant to construct a new office space and garage area, or “bus barn,” next to the Highway Department.
As that work was being done, the Highway Department requested a building addition and remodeling project that would cost about $1 million. …
Commissioners will spend approximately $30,000 to $50,000 to add space to the Heartland project that will be used for Highway Department storage and for washing vehicles.

•Three of Russia’s first businessmen visited Luverne Thursday.
Wearing caps from First Farmers and Merchants Bank and Tri-State Band Fesitval buttons, they strolled down Main Street. They eagerly scanned store fronts and window displays.
Brian Short, owner of First Farmers and Merchants National Bank in Luverne, flew Valentin Litovchenko, Andrey Chuykoff and Leonid Sokoloff and their interpreter from Minneapolis to Luverne for the daylong visit. …
The businessmen’s agenda while in Minnesota included visits with the mayors of Minneapolis and Beaver Creek, a visit to the Minnesota Court of Appeals in St. Paul and a visit to the Rock County Courthouse.

•The Luverne volunteer fire department will cooperate with the state fire marshall’s office in introducing “Operation EDITH” during Fire Prevention Week October 9-15. “Operation EDITH,” meaning Exit Drills In the Home, will be held Wednesday, October 12, according to Fire Chief Harold Van Roekel. …
Families in Luverne and surrounding area are urged by the local fire department to participate next Wednesday by scheduling an all-family drill, and to plan escape routes from their residences. Both a normal and emergency route are recommended.

•The merchants’ corn show, which opens tomorrow and will close next Thursday evening, is sponsored by the Luverne Civic and Commerce association for the purpose of stimulating interest in the growing of better corn and a friendly rivalry among corn growers. …
1.Corn shall be entered in three ear samples at the co-operating business places listed elsewhere on these pages.
2.One person or household may make as many as three entries, but only one entry may be made at any one place.
 
100 years ago (1916)
•Henry Bastor, transient farm laborer, who had been incarcerated in the county jail for six weeks awaiting trial on the charge of attempted forgery, was found to be mentally unbalanced following an examination held Friday morning before Judge of Probate M. Webber by Drs. C.O. Wright, C.L. Sherman and E.O. Thorson. He was accordingly committed to the state hospital at St. Peter, and Deputy Sheriff Foight left Saturday night for that place with the unfortunate man.
