•Luverne High School track and field coach Craig Nelson drew an impressive honor.
The veteran LHS mentor received notice that he was named the 2010 Minnesota State Class A Girls’ Track and Field Coach of the Year.
The honor comes from the Minnesota Track and Field Coaches Association, which bestows the award to four coaches (Class A girls, Class A boys, Class AA girls and Class AA boys) within the Minnesota borders on a yearly basis.
Nelson was named the state’s Class A boys’ coach of the year in 2005 and 2006, but this is the first time he’s been tabbed as the Class A Girls’ Coach of the Year.

•The new Westinghouse refrigerator has been placed on display here by McClure’s Plumbing and Electric.
L. A. McClure announced that the new refrigerator is more beautiful than ever, and has many new mechanical refinements and improvements to provide greater refrigeration economy and satisfaction.
“Of course the new Westinghouse has that big super freezer”, Mr. McClure said, “and as in prewar days, it has that extra large ice cube capacity, with the ‘easy out’ ice trays. There’s a big additional space for frozen storage, plus a drawer type glass meat storage compartment. It is equipped with flexible shelf arrangements, has a drawer type glass topped crisper, and a new all purpose storage bin. But you just have to see the Westinghouse to really appreciate its outstanding advantages.”
Mr. McClure announced that he expected other new Westinghouse home appliances soon.

•Luverne is now on the accepted route of a considerable number of whiskey runners, who daily pass through in high power cars, heavily laden with Canadian booze.
At least four such cars stopped here Sunday, and the initiated declare that there is a steady stream of these motorists passing through both night and day going to and from Canada.
The majority of the whiskey runners that pass this way have their headquarters at Sioux City, Omaha and Lincoln, Neb., and Kansas City, Mo. But points of greater distance are occasionally represented in the travel, for the profits are so large where one gets through with a cargo, that a few hundred miles more or less of travel is a small thing in the lives of those engaged in the illicit trade.
In this connection it is worth of note that the whiskey runner whose car and cargo, consisting of 274 quarts of booze, was captured by the Nobles county sheriff near Worthington a few weeks ago, is said to have passed through Luverne this week with a new car and cargo.
