•The Luverne City Council wants to know if the community would support installing an old-fashioned-looking city clock.
Mayor Andy Steensma found a clock that will cost about $2,000. It is about 20 feet tall and fairly ornate. The city would have some additional costs in the installation of the clock. …
“Some people have said we should have a clock that resembles the older looking streetlights,” Steensma said.
 
25 years ago (1991)
•Luverne High School Principal John Rath will retire June 30 after serving 30 years as the district’s senior high principal.
•Merrill Shoe Store, a 70-year-old Luverne business, is closing its doors.
Randy and Sue Riecks, owners of Merrill Shoe Store, announced Monday plans to close the business.
... Charlie Merrill first opened Merrill Shoe Store in Luverne in 1919 where the current JCPenney catalog store is located at 113 E. Main Street. It moved to 207 E. Main Street in 1964.
Shortly before Charlie died in 1972, he turned the business over to his son Jack Merrill.
In 1981 Jack Merrill died, and his wife sold the business shortly after to Henry Bousema. The Riecks bought the store from Bousema in 1986.

•Luverne voters approved bond issues for a new fire hall and fire truck, and for a new city hall, at a special municipal election Tuesday.
For the fire hall and fire truck the vote was 683 “yes,” 467 “no.”
For the purchase of the old First National Bank building as a city hall, the vote was 739 “yes,” 411 “no.” ...
The old Luverne Creamery property at the corner of McKenzie and Lincoln streets will be purchased for the site of the fire hall.

•As announced in these columns last week, a pie baking contest will be held at the Armory in Luverne on Wednesday, May 21st, and provision has been made for four classes of entries, so that pie bakers of all ages and of both sexes can participate. ...
Under the rules of the contest, all pies must be made with lard as shortening, and only 2-crust pies can be entered, but contestants may enter as many pies as they wish.
 
100 years ago (1916)
•After having conducted a millinery store in Luverne for twenty-four years, Mrs. F. J. Kennedy will retire from business during the coming fall. In conformity with this decision she has begun disposing of her goods at reduced prices, and will gradually close out her entire stock. ...
The Kennedy store building has been leased to Robt. C. Mannigel for a term of five years. ... Mr. Mannigel will occupy the building with his Variety store stock.
