•Voters head to the polls on Tuesday to cast their ballots on the proposed $9.9 million Hills-Beaver Creek bond issue.
The bond for a new high school building will affect taxpayers for the next 25 years and house students as early as the 2011-12 school year.
The H-BC School Board voted unanimously during a meeting in January to put the bond to a vote. In early February the board presented the project plans at a public meeting, and another meeting is scheduled for tonight (Thursday, March 4).
The district began exploring building options following a visit from a representative of the Minnesota Department of Education.
That individual toured the current high school building and determined the district would not be approved for a remodeling project to the current building.
After hearing the news, the board members decided to pursue building a new high school.
They hired Gil Haugan to act as their construction manager and Koch Hazard to be the architect on the project.

•To encourage construction of new houses in Evergreen Addition, agreements are still under consideration by the Luverne Economic Development Authority.
Administrative Services Director Bryan Kienholz said both a Sioux Falls builder and a local group are working to come up with plans and proposals for housing in that area.
While details are still under discussion, the final agreement will probably involve a loan guarantee and purchase by LEDA, if houses aren’t sold within a specified period of time. …
Following a recommendation by the Luverne Community Economic Development Corporation, Kienholz and city staff will assemble the preliminary materials and submit them to the Department of Trade and Economic Development.

•Rock county’s weed eradication program for 1945 was given a boost this week when the county board of commissioners authorized E. J. Willroth, county weed supervisor, to buy several carloads of borax for resale to farmers in the county for weed control purposes.
According to Mr. Willroth, very little, if any, sodium chlorate will be available for weed eradication this year, and borax, another mineral, proves an excellent substitute. In some ways it has been found superior to chlorate. Although it has never been used in Rock county, it has been used elsewhere with good success, and the cost of application is about equal to that of chlorate.
Its use is preferable to chlorate, he pointed out, because it is non-inflammable and non-poisonous. Sodium chlorate will burn, and is poisonous if taken internally by livestock. Borax may be applied on weeds in pastures, whereas chlorate was not suitable for that purpose because of its poisonous properties.
