10 years ago (2012)
•Rock County World War II veterans are in the limelight again after a KSTP news team from the Twin Cities spent a day in Luverne last week.
Longtime television reporter Jason Davis filmed a segment for his popular show, “On the Road with Jason Davis.”
This latest piece, which will air in the coming months, highlights the community’s endearing relationship with its veterans and war history. …
Of the 24 original World War II veterans who started the (Last Man Standing) club in 2009, there are 10 remaining members.
All 10 members gathered for coffee at Glen’s Food Center, and they appeared genuinely pleased to be together as a group.
 
25 years ago (1997)
•Three Luverne boys made the 1997 All-Southwest Conference Baseball Team and another received honorable mention for the recently completed campaign.
Luverne, which placed fourth in the seven-team league with a 5-7 record, had senior catcher Brad Scheidt, senior pitcher-outfielder, Jeff Sehr, and senior shortstop-pitcher Derek Ohme make the all-conference team. …
Luverne senior second baseman Mike Buss is one of nine players to receive honorable mention.
 
50 years ago (1972)
•Blue-eyed Bernita Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Baker of rural Steen, was crowned as Rock County’s Dairy Princess for 1972 during ceremonies at the Blue Mound Inn Monday evening. …
Named as first runner-up was Loann Vanden Bussche, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Vanden Bussche or rural Sherman, S.D. Also named runner-up was Linda Koens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Koens of Beaver Creek.
 
75 years ago (1947)
•Billy Glover, Luverne, announced this week that his ready-mixed cement service is now in operation. The business will be known as the Luverne Ready-Mix Cement Company, and is located at the west edge of Luverne, just off Highway 16.
Mr. Glover has erected a “Quonset” building for his headquarters, and has purchased two trucks on each of which a large mixer is mounted. These mixers mix the sand, cement and water in proper proportions while the truck is on its way to the job.
 
100 years ago (1922)
•The purchase of additional playground equipment, the erection of more picnic tables and seats, and the beautifying of the Luverne public park by making flower beds there, was decided upon at a meeting of the Park Improvement association held Monday evening as the Luverne Commercial club rooms.
The swimming pool, which proved so popular last season, also came in for its share of consideration, and it was announced that the small frame building which had been used in the past in connection with the municipal skating rink, had been moved to the park and fitted up as a dressing room for women bathers, while the tents used in previous years will again be available as a dressing place for men and boys.
During the past few weeks a house to house canvass for memberships in the association was made, thereby adding $92.00 to the treasury, which with a balance of $50 left over from last year, makes a total of $142.00 available for carrying on park improvement work.
