•With roughly $30,000 in grants and donations already paid for the hospital’s healing garden, some are wondering why nothing’s growing there yet.
“Many people are concerned about why their donations have not been used and why the garden has not been started,” said Lynette Jauert, a member of the Master Gardeners, who are heading up the project.
According to Sioux Valley CEO Mark Henke, the delay is due to “several details coming together at the same time.”
 
25 years ago (1991)
•Customers who stopped to fill up at Luverne’s Farmers Union Station on June 27 got a lesson on ethanol from the E-Team.
Four Moorhead State University students representing the American Coalition for Ethanol have been on the road since June 3. The group, known as the E-Team, is visiting service stations in Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota promoting the use of ethanol.
 
50 years ago (1966)
•Everybody loves hot dogs, especially when they’re free!
Luverne merchants will cater to this taste next Wednesday night, July 20, serving from 6:00 p.m.
The popular Hot Dog Nite will also feature additional goodies in the form of merchandise specials the same evening. These specials will be outlined in a special edition of the Luverne Shopper which will “hit the street” on Monday.
 
75 years ago (1941)
•Two midget auto race drivers, Charlie Little and Tuffy Seely, were hurt during the races on the Luverne track Thursday night of last week, but neither was seriously injured.
Little had the ligaments in a knee torn loose when his car got mixed up with another racer, plunged through the fence and overturned. …
Seeley had his legs badly scalded during the feature race when a hose connection in the water line of his car broke. Although painful, his injuries were not serious and he was able to drive at Sioux City last Sunday.
 
100 years ago (1916)
•Assurance that the people of Luverne will enjoy at least another season of Chautauqua was given on the last day of the Chautauqua that has just closed when the necessary guaranty of the required advance sale of season tickets was reported. The Chautauqua system asked that the people of Luverne guarantee the sale of 750 season tickets, and this guaranty was given by about sixty of the business and professional men of the city. The individual subscriptions totaled about 350 tickets, leaving about 400 tickets up for sale.
