•Last week’s dusting of snow was only a precursor to the winter storm that came through the region Tuesday.
Snow started falling Tuesday morning and continued through the day, prompting cancellation of high school sporting events and community activities across the area.
School late starts were announced Tuesday night, only to result in closings the following day as subzero temperatures combined with strong winds to create dangerous travel conditions.
Visibility was reduced through Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, but there were surprisingly few weather-related traffic accidents reported.
Local weather recorder Troy Thone guessed that Luverne received 7 inches of snow from this system.

•Longtime Luverne Superintendent Norman Miller surprised the School Board members Thursday by submitting his resignation.
As the last item on the agenda for the final meeting of the calendar year, Chairman Gene Cragoe read Miller’s letter of resignation to the board.
His resignation will be effective June 30, 1995, ending 16 ½ years of district leadership. “It was a difficult decision,” he said, “but when you’re on top — and I think we’re on top — it’s time to step out of the way.”
The board regretfully accepted his resignation. Cragoe recommended advertising the position and accepting applications until Feb. 10. By April 15, the board should have selected a new superintendent. …
Miller started serving the Luverne district in 1979 after longtime superin-tendent Harvey Eitreim resigned.

•Verla Kitchenmaster, two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Kitchenmaster, of Steen, was brought back from Rochester Tuesday where she had undergone medical treatment for an internal disorder, caused from swallowing a poisonous sink and drain pipe cleaning chemical about a month ago. Her condition is now reported as satisfactory.
Her mother had used the substance in her kitchen sink, and the child happened to get a hold of the container. Although the cover was fastened, some of the chemical apparently remained on the rim at the top and the little girl, upon putting it in to her mouth, swallowed some of the substance.
An antidote was administered promptly, and she was taken to a physician for medical treatment. After that, for a period of about three weeks, she appeared to have fully recovered from its effects.
Last week, however, it became evident that complications had set in for she was unable to retain food which she had eaten. A medical examination showed that the chemical had injured the membranous passageway from the mouth to the stomach, and that in healing, a growth had formed preventing food from entering her stomach.
