•National Guard members from the Luverne and Pipestone unit have been gone since September and deployed last month to Iraq.
But that doesn’t mean they’re completely without the comforts of home.
Family Readiness Coordinator Gina Newman and several families of deployed soldiers have been arranging to send monthly care packages overseas.
 
25 years ago (1991)
•In a sudden move which few people expected, Lampert Building Center made a corporate decision to close its Luverne yard last week.
Company employees in the affected stores received notice on Friday afternoon.
The Luverne store closed for the final time at noon on Saturday.
 
50 years ago (1966)
•Area Highway Patrolmen of late have been trying out a new and improved means of measuring and recording vehicle speeds on highways. Tuesday afternoon State Highway Patrol Sgt. Joel Brown of Worthington demonstrated the equipment in Luverne.
The equipment, which operates for hours off an ordinary 12-volt battery via a cigarette lighter attachment, can measure the speed of vehicles at distances up to 1,500 feet on cars and 3,000 feet on trucks.
 
75 years ago (1941)
•Complete modernization of the domestic science department of the Luverne high school was voted at an adjourned meeting of the board of education Monday evening. In the change the present gas stoves will be discarded and eight new electric stoves installed. A complete outfit of new fixtures, including sinks and cupboards will also be installed and other facilities added.
The present equipment in the department has been in use for many years, and owing to the changes in domestic science work modernization of the equipment has become imperative.
 
100 years ago (1916)
•With several different road grading machines already here, the indications are that the road building contest to be held next Tuesday, May 2nd, by the county commissioners, will be an event of much importance to all township officers, road overseers and others interested in road work.
The commissioners desire to purchase a road grader, and the contest has been arranged for in order to enable the different manufactures of graders to demonstrate the possibilities of their machines and incidentally to enable the board to decide which grader is best suited for their needs. Consequently the concerns competing will undoubtedly leave no stone, or dirt either, unturned in their efforts to secure the order.
