•The Rock County Commissioners are taking steps to address budget shortfalls for 2009 and coming years.
“The board is aware there is a problem and is taking early steps to solve it,” said County Administrator Kyle Oldre.
After several financial retreats involving the board and department heads, commissioners accepted a proposed budget that would address expected shortfalls.
The county’s actions stem from Governor Tim Pawlenty’s proposed state budget and anticipated cuts to local government.

•“Isn’t it interesting how you go from wondering whether they’ll sell to how many to sell?” Mayor Bill Weber commented Monday. He made the observation during the discussion of lot sales in the Evergreen Addition at the Luverne Economic Development Authority Meeting.
His question related to how LEDA should allocate the number of lots in the Evergreen Addition for apartments and condominiums. Evergreen Addition is the new housing area north of the city located just west of Blue Mound Avenue.
The consensus of the group was that building too many multifamily dwellings might make the area less appealing to those purchasing lots for single family homes. The board asked Director Bryan Kienholz to draw up covenants limiting multifamily construction to 16 of the 54 lots in the addition. They earmarked specific lots for multifamily construction according to traffic patterns and lots already purchased.

•Even before war was declared members of the Luverne Rotary club started entertaining service men, home on furlough, at the regular Monday luncheons of the club.
Hardly a week passed that some service man wasn’t present at the luncheon but Monday found an all-time record breaking “bumper crop” of soldier guests. The occasion was the return of Battery E. from Kodiak after three years’ absence from home.
The men didn't all arrive home until Saturday and the club extended its “invitation” by posting handbills in the various business establishments welcoming the men home and inviting them to the luncheon. Several other service men, in addition to the Kodiak contingent, were also guests.
Sgt. Karl Heiden was in charge of “roll call” for the meeting, introducing each man to the club.

•An American “whippet” tank, heavily mottled by the brush of the camoufleur, and showing the scars of German bullets, will be on display in Luverne from Saturday morning, April 19, until the following Tuesday.
This member of the famous tank family is one of  twenty similar implements of war that have been assigned to the Ninth federal district for the purpose of promoting interest in the coming Victory loan campaign. It will be driven by members of the United States Tank corps.
