10 years ago (2005)
•When winds at speeds of almost 90 miles per hour swept through the county last Aug. 3, the local landscape temporarily changed in a huge way. Downed trees blocked city streets; vehicles collapsed; familiar signs fell, and fences were mangled.
 
25 years ago (1995)
•Much like the railroads, freeways and telephone lines brought opportunity to communities in days gone by, the Internet is presenting a whole new world of opportunity for those how are willing to pursue it. Exactly how to jump on the information superhighway dominated a portion of discussion at Tuesday’s County Board Meeting.
 
50 years ago (1965)
•About 30 entries have been listed this week for the first tractor pulling contest ever held in conjunction with the Rock County Fair. The contests this evening begin in front of the grandstand at the Fair Grounds at 7 p.m.
 
75 years ago (1940)
•The second annual tall corn contest for corn growers residing in the Luverne area was announced this week by the Worthington Creamery and Produce company, which is offering $35 in cash prizes and additional awards for the tallest stalks entered in the affair.
 
100 years ago (1915)
•Eight of Luverne’s twelve barbers were fined Friday afternoon when officials of the Minnesota State Examining Board of Barbers proceeded to enforce the provisions of a supposedly “dead-letter” law, requiring barbers to undergo an examination and secure a license for working at their trade. Barbers in all of the four shops in the city were implicated.
