Aug. 13 Remember when

10 years ago (2005)
•A bus load of 37 Luverne residents had coffee with Minnesota’s first lady, Mary Pawlenty, Monday afternoon at the governor’s mansion.
At the core of the entourage were a group of Luverne World War II veterans and their wives who had been personally invited to St. Paul.
Pawlenty extended the invitation after reading about the men and their coffee group meetings at Glen’s Food Center.
 
20 years ago (1995)
•Luverne School Board members decided Thursday to hire a technology coordinator for the district. This person will be hired as soon as possible to facilitate the implementation of new computer equipment in the elementary, middle and high schools.
 
50 years ago (1965)
•“Nature’s Wonderous Way” will be depicted in floral arrangements here at the 9th annual Flower Show Sunday at the First National Bank as hosts, sponsored by The Moccasins.
Also shown will be water colors of Mrs. Don Renfro, Luverne artist, who is a member of The Moccasins.
 
75 years ago (1940)
•Glenn Adams, local resident, talked to a brother, Howard Adams, for the first time in 27 years last Tuesday evening and yet they were so many miles apart, they couldn't see each other. Urgent business made it necessary for the local man to telephone to Sufolk, Mont., … Glenn’s brother had no phone so it was necessary to send a messenger a mile to call him.
 
100 years ago (1915)
•The formal opening of Luverne’s new $50,000 theatre — the New Palace — will take place on Wednesday, September 22nd, was the announcement made Monday by Herman Jochims, owner of the playhouse. He returned that morning from Sioux City, where he had closed a contract for the presentation of the musical comedy, “The Princess of Tonight,” as the opening attraction.
