Local journalism is the heartbeat of informed communities.
It brings stories to light that state and national outlets don’t cover in our communities — stories about school board decisions, city council debates, town celebrations and local heroes.
In a world increasingly shaped by global headlines and social media noise, the Star Herald keeps our readers grounded in civic engagement, accountability and community resilience.
Our journalists, sales staff, team members and creators at the Rock County Star Herald are celebrating National Newspaper Week and hope our readers will celebrate with us.
Why local journalism matters:
We nurture informed citizens: Local reporting empowers people with the information they need to make decisions in their everyday lives — from voting to attending town hall meetings.
We encourage accountability: Local journalists serve as government watchdogs, following spending of tax dollars and decisions that impact our communities.
We serve as community connections: Local news fosters a sense of belonging by highlighting stories that resonate on a personal level.
We improve economic development: Thriving local media can support small businesses through advertising, storytelling and other partnerships that strengthen the local economy.
Here's what we’re asking from our readers and community members:
To build a better future, we must support local journalism through subscriptions, advertising dollars and through sharing stories and news tips with our Star Herald reporters.
We are here to tell your stories, and we rely on you to help keep us and our subscribers in the loop.
Schools, libraries, and civic groups can also play a role in educating the next generation about media literacy and the importance of a free press.
It warms our souls to hear about teachers referring to the Star Herald in their current events or civics classes. We’re also encouraged that educators are teaching young people to be judicious news consumers.
Not all “news” platforms are created equally (or truthfully).
We are also honored to be invited into local eighth-grade careers classrooms to talk about what we do and about opportunities in journalism.
By embracing local journalism, communities are not just preserving the past — they’re shaping a more informed, connected and empowered future.
Celebrate National Newspaper Week with us and consider the vital role we play in informing, empowering and uniting our communities.
