August is Wellness Month

Take advantage of local opportunities to improve health and well-being

Wellness Month is observed in August when we’re encouraged to focus on improving our overall health and well-being.

In our Rock County communities there are countless opportunities to engage in activities that support physical, mental, emotional and social health.

We have walking and biking paths, splash pads, fitness centers and numerous classes for senior balance and strength training.

But wellness is about more than exercise.

It’s about eating well, sleeping well, and engaging well with others socially.

It’s about making necessary appointments with care professionals — whether it’s for dental health, cardiac health, brain health or other aspects of our health.

Ignoring ailments won’t mean they’ll go away. The sooner we make the appointment, the sooner we’ll be on the path toward wellness.

The pros offer several tips to make wellness a priority:

•Practice self-care activities such as meditation, yoga, or spending time in nature.

•Make healthy lifestyle choices, such as eating nutritious foods and getting regular exercise.

•Seek professional help if needed for brain health or other medical conditions.

•Connect with others and build strong social support networks.

•Raise awareness about wellness issues and promote positive health habits.

Life gets busy. Life can be hard. And often our personal wellness is the first to take a back seat to addressing daily demands of life.

But August is a reminder that it is important to prioritize our well-being year-round.

Taking care of ourselves means we’re better equipped to handle the demands of life and the challenges that are thrown our way.
