Winifred “Freddie” Haggard, 92, of De Smet, South Dakota, passed away on Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, at the Good Samaritan Society in De Smet.
A private service will be held at a later date.
Winifred “Freddie” Jeanette (Steffen) Haggard was born on Dec. 7, 1932, to parents Jessie and Dr. Leon Haggard. In 1950 she graduated from Luverne High School in Luverne, Minnesota.
She was married to Douglas Steffen in October of 1951, and they were married for 32 years. They had four children: Jean, James, Patricia and Elizabeth.
Freddie was a stay-at-home mom for many years until her children were grown. She owned and managed the Montgomery Wards in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, for nine years. She also worked as a bookkeeper and eventually found her passion selling life insurance policies for Combined Insurance where she won many sales awards. She lived at home in Luverne, Minnesota, until she was 89 years old. She was a resident at the Good Samaritan Society in De Smet at the time of her death.
Freddie loved cats, especially her cat, Danni. She enjoyed playing pinochle and bridge with her family and friends and loved to try her luck at the casino, shop QVC, and have a glass of wine. She was also an avid fan of The Price is Right.
She enjoyed spending time with her children: Jean (Darrell) Hup of Pleasantville, Iowa, James (Jean) Steffen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Patricia (Tim) Salonen of De Smet, South Dakota.
She loved hearing about and seeing her grandchildren: Marie (Rick) Rudolf, Adri (Ross) Spaur, Austin (Karen) Salonen, April (Martin) Roy, Courtney Steffen, Gabriel Steffen, and Autumn (Wyatt) Fischer.
She was also blessed with 16 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Dr. Leon and Jessie Haggard; her daughter, Elizabeth Steffen; her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Dale (Sunny) Haggard; as well as her sister and brother-in-law, Helen (Dr. Dwayne) Rollag.
