Steven L. Nyhammer, 70, of St. Michael, Minn., entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026. Surrounded by family, he passed at home after a battle with Lewy Body dementia. Steve was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. His heartwarming presence will be deeply missed.
Steve was born on March 23, 1956, in Kyoto, Japan, to Alden and Barbara Nyhammer. He dedicated his life to serving others, including his family, friends, students and athletes. His life is a legacy of love, kindness and generosity. Steve played football in high school and college and did track, throwing both the discus and shotput. He graduated from St. Cloud State in 1978 with a degree in elementary education and began his teaching career by teaching ninth grade at Princeton High, then moving to the Anoka Hennepin School District for the remainder of his tenure. He also had a master’s degree in education from St. Thomas University. He was a school teacher for 40 years and will be remembered by countless students as a favorite teacher, the kind that not only shapes the mind but touches the heart and leaves a lasting impression.
He was an avid outdoorsman who deeply enjoyed being in nature, hunting, fishing and especially spending time at the hunting shack with his kids and family. He loved the Lord and was involved in his church in various capacities throughout the years. Steve was a cherished coach and guided many young athletes in football, baseball and track, including his own sons. He was a wonderful singer and could often be heard singing worship songs joyfully. He had an ability to fix just about anything, a great sense of humor and was always quick to laugh. His trademark chuckle will be remembered fondly by so many.
Steve loved his children with all his heart and treated his stepchildren as his own. He was an exceptional father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Matt (Liz) Nyhammer, Lexi (Andrew) Ross, and Cullen Lyons; his grandchildren, Cade and Annie Nyhammer, Alena Nyhammer, Vera, Vivian, Esther, and Margaret Ross; his mother, Barbara Nyhammer; and his brothers, Grand (Diane) Nyhammer and Kevin (Terrie) Nyhammer.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alden Nyhammer; his father and mother-in-law, Delmar and Joyce Pap.
Funeral service was at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael.
