Lawrence A. Gaul, 89, Ellsworth, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A funeral service was Thursday, Sept. 3, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellsworth. Burial was at St. Mary Cemetery in Ellsworth.
Lawrence Gaul was born Aug. 27, 1926, to Lambert and Theresa (Stein Kampen) Gaul in Granville, Iowa. He attended St. Mary Catholic School in Ellsworth. Lawrence entered the U.S. Army in November 1944 and served his country during World War II, receiving the American Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, two Overseas Service Bars and the Army of Occupation Medal, before being honorably discharged in August 1946.
In 1945 Lawrence met Inge Ruhofer at a dance in Germany at the end of World War II. On Sept. 25, 1947, he married Inge at St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellsworth. After their marriage they lived north of Ellsworth. In 1949 they moved to their current home in Ellsworth. Lawrence was a carpenter for Pat Olson’s construction business in Ellsworth. He later worked for Peterson Construction in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the city of Ellsworth, had a bulk route for Standard Oil in Ellsworth, Becker Lumber Yard in Adrian and Great Plains Supply in Ellsworth. After his retirement, he was a school bus driver in Ellsworth and worked as a custodian at St. Mary Catholic Church.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellsworth and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed working with wood and watching the Minnesota Twins.
Lawrence is survived by a son, Richard (Connie) Gaul, Ellsworth; a daughter, Ramona (Jerry) Rupp, Andover; seven grandchildren, Wendy (Darrick) Heikes, Christine Rupp, Allen (Kim) Gaul, Anthony (Sadye) Rupp, Tammy (Shane) Kindt, Brandi Gaul and Craig (Andrea) Gaul; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Inge Gaul, on April 20, 2011; and three brothers, Alvin, Jim and Jerome Gaul.
