LaVon Mohr, age 91, of Luverne, Minn., died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, at the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Hartquist Funeral Home in Luverne. Visitation will be held one hour prior from 10 to 11 a.m. Inurnment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.

LaVon Carol Holtan was born to Joe and Ahme (Tesch) Holtan on July 4, 1935, in Lac Qui Parle County, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed at Lac Qui Parle Lutheran Church. LaVon was the youngest of three children and attended rural school for seven years. She graduated from Dawson High School in 1954. After graduation she attended Minnesota Teacher’s College in Mankato, Minn., (now Minnesota State University, Mankato.) She moved to Luverne, Minn., in 1958 and took a job with the Luverne School District teaching third grade until 1970 when she resigned and son John was born. She remained a substitute teacher in the district until 1985.
LaVon was united in marriage to David Mohr of Luverne on June 9, 1963, at Lac Qui Parle Lutheran Church, Dawson Minn. Following their marriage, the couple lived in an apartment on Main Street Luverne while their new home was under construction on North Freeman Street in Luverne. LaVon often said with a smile that tongues were wagging about Luverne that a couple yet to marry had already purchased a parcel of land together and began construction of a new home. They moved into their new home on Nov. 20, 1963. They lived together for over 50 years in the home they built together until 2014 when Parkinson’s Disease forced LaVon (with David at her side) to move into the Good Samaritan Oaks and Poplar Creek, Luverne.
In 1977 LaVon began working for the Luverne Announcer with husband David who had been with the Announcer since 1969. She worked for Tollefson Publishing until 2009 when both she and David retired together. LaVon also delivered Luverne Announcer newspapers to the residents surrounding their home on Freeman Street from 1989 until 2009. She took over the Announcer route their son John started in 1977, delivering papers when he graduated from High School in 1989.
Following her marriage to David, LaVon was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne where she regularly attended bible circle groups, assisting in the kitchen during church events, teaching Sunday school, midweek classes, and vacation Bible school. She was also a charter member of the ’92 Luverne Lions Club. LaVon often recalled fond memories of growing up on the family homestead north of Dawson, Minn. She raised pigs for 4-H and enjoyed raspberries, chokecherries, plums, apples and pears she tended in the orchard on the farm. She rode her Doodlebug scooter everywhere she wanted to go on and off the farm. LaVon was a lifelong friend to all animals but was especially fond of cats. In adulthood she enjoyed reading, sewing, riding her moped, going to garage sales, and walking with friends. During the holidays, LaVon always invited friends, and friends of the family, who were alone to join the Mohr family for holiday meals.
On Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, LaVon passed away at the Good Samaritan Society - Mary Jane Brown in Luverne at 91 years, 1 month and 7 days.
LaVon is survived by her son, John (Jennifer) Mohr of Temecula, Calif., and grandson Aidan of Temecula. She was preceded in death by her only husband of 60 years, David; her parents; sister Jean and brother Donald Holtan.
