Gertrude Hup was born to Dick and Dena (Hoff) Bosch on June 11, 1929, in her parents’ home near Steen. She was baptized in July of 1929 and confirmed in 1949, both at the Steen Reformed Church. Gertrude attended Steen Elementary School. She then attended and graduated from Luverne High School.

Gertrude was united in marriage to Dick Hup on Aug. 24, 1948, at her parents’ home in Steen. The couple made their first home in Steen where Dick continued to farm with his father while he also worked part time at John Morrell’s in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1952 the couple started farming on their own on a farm near Beaver Creek, Minnesota. Later they moved their family near Steen to continue farming.

Dick retired from farming in 1978. Dick and Gert moved to Hills, where she continued her career at the Tuff Memorial Home. She worked as a nursing assistant until her retirement in September of 2004.

In May of 2011, Dick passed away. Gert continued living in their home in Hills until she became a resident of the Tuff Home in March of 2023.

Gert was a lifelong member of the Steen Reformed Church and was very active in many serving groups, Ladies Circle, and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed spending time with and attending the many activities of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was always happily in attendance at all activities from sports to programs. Gert and Dick were members of a card club for nearly 50 years and forged many close friendships with those couples. She loved embroidery and was known for her many dishtowel sets. She also enjoyed reading and doing puzzles. Group tour bus trips made for very fond memories as well as touring on a smaller scale around town on the golf cart with Dick in the evenings visiting friends.

Gert was a selfless servant to many. She helped her family with babysitting, cooking, taking care of newborn babies and many other needs. As a volunteer in the Tuff Home she helped with activities until the Covid pandemic closed those opportunities.

Gert will be lovingly remembered by her five sons, Darrell and his wife, Jean, of Pleasantville, Iowa, Richard and his wife, Bernita, of Litchfield, Minnesota, Stanley and his wife, Sharon, of Nisswa, Minnesota, Ronald and his wife, Cheryl, of Hills, Minnesota, and Jerry and his wife, Joann, of Pipestone, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren, Marie, Candace, Adrianne, Rebecca, Kristine, Jana, Daniel, Jason, Leah, Matthew, Chris, and Jessica; 21 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law John Hup of Luverne; and many other family members.

Gert was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Dick; her parents, Dick and Dena Bosch; three infant brothers and one infant sister; her brother Dries Bosch and his wife, Laura Mae; her brother Cornie Bosch and his wife, Darlene; her sister Betty and her husband, Edward Boeve; sister-in-law Alvina Hup; and a granddaughter, Michelle Hup.

Blessed be the life of Gert.
