Evelyn Cecelia Feit, 97, Luverne, died Monday, Aug. 10, 2015, at Sanford Hospital in Luverne.
A memorial service was Friday, Aug. 14, at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Wilmont.
Evelyn Bergin was born Nov. 13, 1917, to John and Barbara (Gilfoy) Bergin in rural Springwater Township, Rock County. She attended school at St. Mary’s Academy in Dell Rapids, South Dakota, for three years and graduated from Sherman High School in Sherman, South Dakota. She then attended Mankato State Teacher’s College. After graduation Evelyn returned home and began her teaching career in Rock County. Throughout the years she taught school in both Rock and Pipestone counties.
On June 14, 1939, Evelyn married Eugene Feit at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Pipestone. The couple made their home in rural Rushmore, where they farmed for 50 years. In 1977 they began wintering in Mesa, Arizona. After retirement in 1987, they moved to Luverne. Eugene preceded her in death in 2000.
Evelyn was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and most recently a member of St. Catherine Church in Luverne. She was a 70-plus-year member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, holding both local and state offices. In 2014 Evelyn was recognized as the oldest living Catholic Daughter. She was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Wilmont, holding offices in the WCCW. She was also a member of the LCCW in Luverne, Senior Dining and the Nobles County Extension Club. She was active in the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), especially at Sanford Hospital and the Hinkly House. She was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing cards, swimming and baking.
Evelyn is survived by seven children, Ronald (Kathy) Feit, Pine City, Larry (Bernadette) Feit, Winter Haven, Florida, Lowell (Rhonda) Feit, Luverne, David (Crystal) Feit, Rushmore, Bradley (Debra) Feit, Dell Rapids, Barbara (Robert) Verhey, Luverne, and Brian (Linda) Feit, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Feit, Mankato; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; three sons, Steven, James, and an infant son, Daryl Feit; a granddaughter, Bethany Feit; her parents; and two sisters, Esther Bergin and Barbara Nelson.
