Dr. Doris Vivien Schoon – Dec. 31, 1928-July 29, 2026; Anaheim, Calif.
Dr. Doris Vivien Schoon, a physician, teacher, philanthropist, and devoted friend, passed away peacefully at her home on July 29, 2026, at age 97.
Born in Luverne, Minn., to Jacob and Esther Viola (Hansen) Schoon, she earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota in 1954 and became a board-certified ophthalmologist.
She later earned a master's in electrical engineering from CSU Long Beach in 1991 to advance research into age-related vision changes. She taught resident physicians at UC Irvine, served veterans at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, and volunteered at mission hospitals in Kenya and New Mexico. A devoted member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church of Garden Grove, she was known for her sharp mind, quiet generosity, and steadfast faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Warren Schoon, and nephew Steven Warren Schoon. She is survived by her nieces and nephews - Susan E. Schoon Eberly, Peter Schoon, Christian Schoon, Hans Schoon, and Donna Schoon, spouse of Steven Schoon - along with their families, and by her beloved dog, Timmy.
A celebration of life will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 25, at First Presbyterian Church in Luverne, followed by burial at Maplewood Cemetery.
