Alyce Jeanette Nelson, 92, Delano, formerly of Luverne, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020, at the Legacy of Delano Assisted Living in Delano.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will precede the service.
Alyce Doorneweerd was born was born March 22, 1927, in rural Lyon County, Iowa, to Johannes and Dorothy Doorneweerd. She attended country school in Lyon County.
When Alyce was 8 years old her family moved to a farm south of Lester, Iowa. Alyce attended school through eighth grade but had to leave school in order to help her mother who suffered from asthma.
Alyce began her working career as a waitress at the Duchess Cafe in Luverne.
Alyce married Morton Nelson on Dec. 18, 1948, in Luverne. They lived in a basement dwelling in Hills.
She candled eggs at Fikse's Hatchery in Hills.
In 1960 the family moved to Luverne. Alyce worked for M & JR Hakes also candling eggs. She was employed by Creeger's Children's Shop as a retail sales person. After leaving Creeger's, Alyce worked at the Good Samaritan Home, the Luverne Style Shop, and a number of years in the lunch line at Luverne Public Schools. She was a frequent volunteer at Sanford Hospital, BackPack Program, Veterans Home and Grace Lutheran Church just to name a few.
Alyce has been a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Twins and always stating that win or lose they were "Her Boys.”
Alyce was an avid walker, passionate reader, animated poet and crossword puzzle enthusiast.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne.
Alyce is survived by her five children James Nelson, South St. Paul, Paul (Robin) Nelson, Blaine, Char (Dick) Trende, Hudson, Wisconsin, Lauri (Jim) Fox, Tracy, and Daniel (Lori) Nelson, Delano; her eleven grandchildren Rich Nelson, Kristin Nelson, Bethany (Kyle) Steffen, Andrea (Kory) Werk, Jennifer Nelson, Katherine (Daniel) Joyce, Elizabeth (Andy) Johnson, Scott Trende, Sean Fox, Eric (Stephanie) Nelson and Sarah Nelson; nine great-grandchildren; and sister Dorothy DeRoo, Brooten.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Morton; brothers Joe (Caroline) Doorneweerd and Dick (Leah) Doorneweerd, sister Jeanette (Casey) Mauw; and brother-in-law Lloyd DeRoo.
