Luverne School Board Candidates
Lead Summary
, , ,

1.) List experiences that will be helpful in fulfilling the position’s duties if you win the Nov. 8 general election.
2.) What do you think are the primary challenges facing your community and how will you lead your school through these challenges?

Incumbent Luverne School Board member Colleen Deutsch is seeking her fifth term. She and her husband, Doug, have lived in rural Luverne for more than 26 years and have four children, Amber (Ben) Winkels, Caitlyn, Derek and Dustin. All of them are LHS graduates. They also have two grandchildren, Ainsley and Brinley.
1.) •Member of Luverne School Board for 16 years.
•Active with Special Olympics, St. John Lutheran Church, Thrivent Action Teams and Hardwick All School Reunion.  Past involvement - Parents Partners in Education; Girl Scouts; Sunday School and Midweek teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and Board of Christian Education, and other organizations.
•A nurse for 33+ years - currently an ICF Care Coordinator at LifeScape in Sioux Falls.
•Served in the Army Reserves for 8+ years, activated for Desert Storm and honorably discharged as a captain.
•A long-term resident of Luverne.
I’m very interested and concerned about all members of our community.  We need to make sure we are providing educational opportunities to build a strong foundation to help everyone in becoming responsible and productive citizens.
2.) Two challenges are education funding and declining enrollment. We need to continue to advocate and work with our legislators and governor for appropriate and adequate funding.  It will be essential to evaluate difficult funding decisions but my goal is to make choices that have the least impact on students and the classroom.
•We need to continue to embrace technology to keep up with the learning demands of the 21st century.  It will be very important to work closely with the administration team and technology committee to monitor technology tools in the ever-evolving digital world.
•Attract and hire quality teachers in specific fields and substitute teachers due to teacher shortages.
I will continue to work hard for the community and school with the administration team, board members, teachers, students, and other essential school staff such as bus drivers, cooks, custodians, paraprofessionals, office staff, school nurse, etc. along with families and community members to provide quality education to all students to empower them to be successful and reach their highest academic achievement.
Kenny Rolling is running for a seat on the Luverne School Board. He and his wife, Stacey, are nine-year residents of Luverne and have two children, Henry, a ninth-grader, and Kate, a third-grader, in Luverne Public Schools.
1.) With a career of business management, I will be able to apply these skills to provide effective governance of school district affairs which are under control of the school board. I will offer careful oversight of district financial concerns, balancing student needs while maintaining a strict fiduciary responsibility to my fellow taxpayers.
Also, as a parent of a child with special needs, I have developed an understanding of the school district’s role in education and other developmental services for individuals with various special needs. I will use this knowledge and my acquired network of professionals to help our school district continue to provide admirable services to these individuals.
2.) A couple of the primary challenges I feel our school and community are facing are bullying and providing our youth with the tools necessary to become independent members of our community. I will focus on continuing the school district’s efforts to eliminate bullying through education of the student body, providing real-world experience to the students regarding the impact of bullying, and enforcing the district’s policies dealing with infractions of these policies.
I will also champion our educators’ efforts to help students discern their vocations carefully and ensure that they achieve the proper tools they will need to either enter into the workforce or to continue their education toward a marketable degree.
Shelley Sandbulte is running for reelection to the Luverne Public School Board. She and her husband, Ned, have two children, Taylor Pedersen, 26, and Connor Sandbulte, 19. The couple has lived in rural Luverne for 18 years.
1.) •Six years serving on the school board.
•Three levels of training for school board position.
•Twenty-six years as licensed psychologist in private practice in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Scope of practice is post-traumatic stress disorder (e.g. sexual abuse, veterans.)
• Fourteen years as an RN at Sioux Valley (now Sanford) Hospital; nine years in the trauma center.
2.) The scope of the school board mission is to serve students to the best of our ability. In order to do this, we maintain a continuous monitoring of technology, administration, teachers and all staff (i.e. food service, building and ground maintenance as well as safe fleet of vehicles and skilled bus drivers.)
I believe one challenge has been helping those without children or who no longer have school-aged children in our school district to understand that these young people are our future. All dollars spent for the district must go though a check-and-balance process.
I feel our administration is held accountable to be good stewards of the money.
Tim Jarchow is seeking a seat on the Luverne School Board. Jarchow and his wife Kayla have been married for 19 years and have three sons: Jacob, Luke and Benjamin.
1.) I have worked in retail for 15 years and served on retail committees. I was a deacon in our church, two years as chairman. I have been a board member of the Luverne Baseball Association for seven years, and vice president for the past four years. I have 15 years of coaching experience in various sports that my children have participated in: soccer, flag football, baseball and basketball.
With the exception of college, I have lived in Luverne my entire life. I attended Luverne High School, and now my children do as well. I have witnessed the changes and growth of the school, and appreciate all of the hard work done by the teachers, coaches and administration.
2.) There are no specific problems or challenges that have brought about my decision to seek this position.
I feel that our community and school have many more strengths than weaknesses. The greatest of these is the willingness of good people volunteering their time to give our kids a great place to grow and learn.
I would be honored to have the opportunity to lend my voice and opinions to ensure that our students are always provided a quality education, good nutrition, and an atmosphere to learn that is free of stereotypes and bullying.
Thank you in advance for this opportunity.
