No one was injured Monday, Aug. 21, when a train collided with a pickup on the tracks near Beaver Creek.
According to information from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, officials were notified at 6:30 p.m. of a train vs. pickup crash at 30th Avenue and 61st Street.
Upon arrival, members of the sheriff’s office located a 2001 Chevrolet pickup approximately 100 yards east of the road where the track crosses.
Jacob Fick, 21, of Luverne said that he had been the driver of the pickup and that his passenger, Micah Stensland-Bos, 20, of Luverne had left the scene.
Fick reportedly said that he and Stensland-Bos were traveling on the tracks looking for a fishing pond, when he got a flat tire and the truck was unable to get over the tracks.
He said they both heard the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train coming, and they tried to wave the train to stop.
The cars were apparently loaded and the train was unable to stop in time, totaling the pickup. There was no apparent damage to the train.
The sherriff’s office cited Fick for “Trespassing – Crime against a Railroad” and reckless driving.
Stensland-Bos was cited for underage consumption.
The incident reportedly caused significant delays for railroad companies involved while rail deliveries were backed up for miles while the track was being cleared.
