“Superstar: The Songs, The Stories, The Carpenters” will come to the Palace Theatre stage in Luverne at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4.
The Carpenters had 16 consecutive Top 20 hits during the 1970s with songs like “Close to You,” "We've Only Just Begun," "Superstar," "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "I Won't Last a Day Without You.”
International vocalist Helen Welch now tours the country with a “documusical” that celebrates the music and the story of the brother-sister duo, Richard and Karen Carpenter.
“They succeeded at a time when rock and roll was popular,” Welch said. “They were singing ballads when bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones were popular.”
She said their unique sound among the noise was what made the Carpenters were successful.
“It was wonderful, peaceful, beautiful …” Welch said. “It was a completely new sound with lush harmony.”
She said the Carpenters’ music becomes more meaningful when shared with back-stage stories behind the songs.
“The stories bring the songs to life,” Welch said. “We dare you not to sing along.”
Tickets are $25 at the Palace Box Office, 507-283-4339, or online at www.palacetheatre.us.
