Courts to use e-Filing

Beginning Nov. 5, court users will have the ability to electronically file and serve documents through an online portal.
The move to electronic filing and service of case documents — known as eFiling and eService — is part of the Minnesota Judicial Branch’s eCourtMN initiative to replace paper-based court files.
According to Court Administrator Denise Brandel, Luverne, it’s all about improving public access.
“The purpose of the initiative is to make the state’s courts more accessible, convenient and efficient for court users, giving them access to Minnesota courts 24/7,” Brandel said.
“They no longer need to drive to their nearest courthouse to file their documents.”
For the past several years, district court eFiling and eService has been piloted in 11 courts. Within the last month, more than 50 other courts have begun using the electronic system.
Rock County is among 14 counties that began the service last week. Other area counties using it include Jackson, Cottonwood, Murray, Nobles and Pipestone.
Recent amendments to the Minnesota’s Rules of Court will make the use of eFiling and eService mandatory for attorneys, government agencies, guardians ad litem and sheriffs in all district courts on July 1, 2016.
The goal is to discontinue paper files and improve efficiencies.
“The time savings realized by eFiling and eService will allow staff more time to spend on other important areas of case processing,” Brandel added.
“Another advantage will be that multiple court users will have simultaneous access to the court file, and it will allow staff to help with case processing in other counties without leaving their home county.”
Judges will also be able to use the new system for private electronic notes and use computers and laptops while in the courtroom, Brandel said.
The Minnesota Judicial Branch has posted informational resources, training materials and a three-step guide to starting eFiling and eService at www.mncourts.gov/eFile.
