After a nearly two-month delay, the Luverne High School trap shooting team opened a modified spring season May 18.
According to coach Scott Loosbrock, many changes have been made to the season because of concerns related to the coronavirus.
“We’re glad the full season wasn’t canceled, but there will be no state or national tournaments this year,” Loosbrock said.
Instead, the team was given the option to shoot a five-week season locally and submit scores to the league to determine the team’s placement and recognize top shooters.
Loosbrock said social distancing requirements have impacted the team in a number of ways.
“We waited to start until the stay-at-home orders were lifted and are scheduling the kids to shoot in small groups 15 minutes at a time,” he said. “And of course we already shoot outside and six feet apart.”
There are also no team practices this spring, only the five competitive shooting sessions.
This year’s team includes seven seniors who were freshmen when the Luverne program began with twelve members in 2017.
“They are a great group of kids and have been great leaders for the team,” Loosbrock said,
“They had a good chance to go to state, too,” he said. “They have been shooting real well already this year.”
The team has completed three of their five regular season shoots and will complete the season the week of June 18.
“The state league will then calculate all the scores and place teams in conferences after the season to determine how the team places.
“It’ll be different, but I’m glad we got to have some kind of season for the seniors,” Loosbrock said.
