The Luverne High School boys’ tennis team competed in its 10th consecutive Class A Minnesota State Boys’ Tennis Team Tournament June 4.
The event was staged at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
The Cardinals suffered identical 6-1 losses to Rochester Lourdes and Thief River Falls at the state tournament.
“The team played hard both matches,” said Luverne coach Greg Antoine. “We had good points in each and every match.”
Antoine said the team just needed more consistent play in order to be competitive at the state level.
“It’s very fast and intense tennis at the state tournament,” he said. “We just don’t see that all season until we get up there.”
The lone Luverne victory in each match came from Cardinal freshmen Blake Frahm and Griffen Jarchow who won two matches Monday at No. 3 doubles.
“Blake and Griffen really have improved over the season,” Antoine said.
“They put it all together in the state tournament and won both of their matches. It will be fun to watch them improve the next three years.”
Antoine said nine of the starting 10 players on the LHS team will return next year.
“Our goal next year will be to be more consistent,” he added.
Luverne ended its season with a 13-8 record.
Mounds Park Academy defeated St. Paul Academy and Summit School 4-3 to win the Class A state boys’ tennis team title.
