Preuss: Another freedom lost

To the Editor:
I read Rick Peterson’s column concerning the Affordable Care Act, and a few quotes came to my mind. It led me to think. (Here’s trouble.)
Dick Gregory, the black activist and comedian, said, “Everything we do we should look at in terms of the millions of people who can’t afford it.”
You are one of the millions who had affordable health insurance but now find it hard to afford or worse can’t afford it all. 536 elected officials in Washington are so entrenched in their ideology and agenda they have forgotten their primary objective is to protect our freedoms. From without with armed forces, from within with a police force and the freedom to pursue our own happiness.
Laws are passed not to allow us to do things but to prevent us from doing them. We are forced to give 6.2 percent of our earnings to the government for our retirement. The employer is forced to give the same amount. What does the government do? They spend it. What an investment! Two questions: Why can’t we invest it ourselves? Why is the employer forced to give up part of his profit to someone else’s retirement?
Health insurance is another loss of freedom. You are forced to have insurance or pay a penalty. Social Security and Obamacare are noble objectives but the effects are less than desirable.
Dick Gregory also said, “The most difficult thing to get people to do is the obvious.”
What I fear is that when the elected read our words, I am reminded of what Redd Fox said: “If you can read the writing on the wall, you’re on the toilet.” Lets hope they get off the pot!
