Johnson: All dogs are pets first

To the Editor:
It was with great dismay that I read Scott Rall's column, “When Choosing a Lab Puppy, Research Hip Genetics First.” This column not only suggests that hunting dogs cannot be pets, but that they are also a waste of time should they fail to perform.
As an owner of both an occasional-hunting hunting dog and a rescue, I am here to inform you that they are pets first. I've seen firsthand the failure of owners to continue to care for and love their ex-hunting dogs.
It was appalling to read the sentence, “Once the kids fall in love with the dog, it’s a very bad time to figure out it has a bad wheel.”
Please respect the animal, regardless of whether it is a working dog, a show dog or a companion. At the end of the day, they deserve to be a part of your family.
