Doherty: Keep our board of commissioners balanced

To the Editor:
I am writing this letter to encourage all voters in the first and third county commissioner districts to be sure to vote in the upcoming primary.  It is very important that those of us in agriculture maintain a balanced county board.
Everyone in Rock County is affected by agriculture in some way, but those actively involved in agriculture have more at stake than most.  Agriculture is being challenged on many fronts, from animal rights to water quality.  We need to have a local government who understands the day-to-day effect this has on the county’s crop and livestock producers.
Keep in mind that the county board appoints the members of the planning and zoning board as well as the rural water board, and they have final say on all their decisions.  Agriculture is the driving economic force of the county, and it is important that we do all we can to protect this asset.
I also feel it is important to have the county as a whole well represented.  It would be best to have the members of the board come from varying parts of the county rather than to have a majority from one area. This would be helpful when it comes to roads, bridges, and other county infrastructure needs, as the board members would actually be using them.
Thank you, and be sure to vote for a balanced board.
