Edwin Albert Holst, age 87, passed away on December 24, 2023, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota, where he received compassionate, respectful, and dedicated care for nearly 3 1/2 years.

Edwin was born on February 17, 1936, in Luverne, to Otto and Leona (Goehle) Holst. He graduated from Hills High School in 1954, where he lettered in basketball and football. He went on to lead a remarkable life dedicated to service, family, and community.

On May 13, 1967, Edwin married the love of his life, Karen (Schiro) Holst, and together they built a life on a farm in rural Spicer, Minnesota, for over 40 years. Edwin was a loving husband, and his heart remained with Karen even after her passing on July 2, 2016.

He was a devoted father to Kevin Holst of Morrison, Colorado, who is married to Sarah (Hickey) Holst. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Ella (22) and Margaret (20) Holst. He was a supportive presence in their lives, offering guidance and love.

Edwin served his country with honor and distinction, dedicating 37 years of his life to the U.S. Army and Minnesota National Guard, retiring in 1996 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer Four (CW4). His commitment extended to education as he graduated from Minnesota Technical College in Willmar, Minnesota, earning an Associate Arts Degree in Accounting. Later he achieved the significant milestone of becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). For over 40 years, Edwin operated Edwin A. Holst Accounting in Spicer, leaving a lasting impact on the community.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Edwin was deeply committed to community service, exemplified by his active membership in Lions Club International. He served as the 5M Council Secretary for many years, embodying the Lions Club’s motto of “We Serve.” Also, Edwin served for many years as an elder and active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar, Minnesota.

Edwin is survived by his sister, Vivian Holst of Luverne; niece Jana (Schiro) Schafer (husband Teal), and nephew Justin Schiro (wife Stephannie); brother-in-law Jerry Schiro (wife Sue); and his many loving cousins on the Holst and Goehle sides of his family. He will be fondly remembered by his extended family and friends.

Edwin Albert Holst will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his legacy of service, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire those he loved and impacted. May he rest in eternal peace.
