From farmyard manure to political mudslinging – this is where to clear the air

This week’s Star Herald Opinion Page represents the quintessential community newspaper opinion page. It has the perfect mix of personal columns and letters to the editor on local topics.
It’s an editor’s dream.
This, dear readers, is what an opinion page should be: a format to air local opinions.
And it’s ideal when differing opinions are submitted on the same topic in the same week.
Thank you, Mike Rofshus and Magie Wieneke, for your letters.
The topic (manure) may not be earth-shattering, but from what we’ve heard, manure tracked into public spaces can evoke strong personal responses.
So can presidential elections.
As we enter a general election year and an increasingly earlier campaign season, we encourage our readers to think about what they want from political leaders and to bring those ideas to our opinion page.
We won’t run letters promoting or condemning specific candidates, but we’d love to see candid discussion on issues that matter to Rock County residents.
To submit a letter for publication, email editor@star-herald.com or send it to the Star Herald, PO Box 837, Luverne, MN 56156.
Letters must be signed (anonymous letters cannot be printed) and they should conform to our letters policy of 300 to 500 words.
Of course, if there are other opinions about farmyard manure, we welcome those, too.
